Concrete per fence post formula

V = holes × ((π × r² × depth) − (post area × depth))

Treat each hole as a cylinder — pi times the hole radius squared times the depth — then subtract the volume the post itself takes up below ground. Multiply by the number of posts and add 10% for waste.

Worked example: A 4×4 post in a 10 in hole dug 24 in deep needs about 0.92 ft³ once the post displaces its share — roughly two 80 lb bags per post.

Setting fence posts is the most common small concrete job there is, and the one where ordering is most often wrong — because the post itself occupies a good share of the hole. On a 4×4 in a 10 in hole, the timber displaces roughly 16% of the concrete you would calculate from the hole alone. Over a forty-post run, that difference is about six bags.

Round up to whole bags on every post, not on the run total — you cannot spread the rounding across holes that are already filled.

Sizing the hole

Two rules cover almost every residential fence:

Cold climates override both: the hole must reach below the local frost line or the post will heave. Frost depth is set by local code and ranges from nothing to well over a metre.

Where the estimate goes wrong

Bags or ready-mix

Fence posts are a bagged-concrete job almost every time: the concrete goes into scattered holes over a long working session, which suits mixing as you go far better than a truck waiting on site. But a long run adds up. Forty 4×4 posts at two bags each is eighty 80 lb bags — around 1.8 yd³, and well past the point where a trailer mixer or a ready-mix delivery with a couple of helpers saves a day of work.

How much concrete do I need per fence post?
For a 4×4 post in a 10 in hole dug 24 in deep, about 0.92 cubic feet after the post displaces its share — roughly two 80 lb bags. A 6×6 post in a 12 in hole at 30 in deep needs about 1.44 cubic feet, or three bags. Multiply by your post count and add the 10% buffer.
How many bags of concrete per fence post?
Two 80 lb bags covers most 4×4 residential fence posts, and three covers a 6×6. In metric, a 100 mm post in a 250 mm hole at 600 mm deep takes about two and a half 20 kg bags. Always round up — running half a bag short on the last post means a second trip.
How wide should the hole be?
Three times the post width is the standard rule. A 4×4 post (89 mm actual) wants a 250-300 mm hole, and a 6×6 wants 300-350 mm. Wider holes are more forgiving to plumb but the concrete goes up with the square of the diameter, so oversizing gets expensive quickly.
How deep should a fence post go?
One-third of the above-ground post height, with a minimum of 600 mm in stable soil. A 1.8 m fence therefore wants about 600 mm in the ground. Gate posts, corner posts and anything in soft soil or high wind should go deeper, and cold regions must clear the frost line.
Should I set posts in dry concrete or mixed?
Mixing properly gives a stronger, more predictable set and is what manufacturers specify. The dry-pour method — dumping bagged mix in and wetting it — is common for light fencing and works in damp soil, but cure is uneven and strength is lower. Don't use it on gate posts or structural posts.
Do I need gravel in the bottom of the hole?
Yes for timber posts. 75-100 mm of compacted gravel lets water drain away from the post end instead of sitting against it, which is what rots posts first. Measure the concrete depth from the top of the gravel, not the bottom of the hole, or you will over-order.
